58- Suggestions for Podfading your podcast show- when it is time

This is a repurposed episode from PodcastReporter.com.  It deals with with suggestions when you are considering podfading your show (i.e., ending your publication of episodes of your podcast show), as well as with some recommendations based on a case-in-point and sample.

The example is contained in the audio episode itself around the 11:00 minute mark.

We classified podfading into both ABRUPT and PLANNED podfades.

We have an example of a PLANNED podcast episode to podfade the show where the 3 recommended criteria are:

  1. Advise your audience or listeners that there will be no further episodes published on this show;
  2. Make the podfading episode very short and to-the-point (we recommend 2 to 3 minutes max.);
  3. Thank your audience for their attention, subscriptions, consumption of your content and where to go for the same–or better–content.

The case-in-point we have is a podcast show which was started in 2007 called “WHAT’S NEW ON IBM TV(R)?” — which podfaded in 2009. The last episode was called “Farewell and Thank You.”

Now, has IBM TV survived? Yes, but in a different format and different platform. It also has a YouTube(R) channel, where the theme of IT Solutions from IBM(R) is still the focus.

We hope that you keep the integrity of your show with your audience with the courtesy and politeness to your listeners — we feel that you owe them that. And, instead of surprise or leaving a poor taste in the mouth of your listeners, you can depart your show, as well as leave your listeners with a recommended successor so that they can get the content which they like.

29- Considerations on Podfading

Although we like to think positively and aspire that our podcast shows will go on forever and grow forever, we take a look at the reality of the environment in podcasting.

In this episode, we review some of the reasons for considering podfading your podcast show — all the way from burnout to a “fade-out, then fade-in” to begin another new podcast show, but with revitalized passion. Many of them deal with real-life situations and cases-in-point.

Some of the reasons given are:

-.Complications due to Health or age

– Too many podcast shows where you cannot do justice to them;

– Podcasting isn’t “fun” any more;

– Passion is fading;

– Just want podcasting to be no more than a “hobby”;

– Loss of your co-host or JV Partner;

– Decline of interest from your listeners or community, thus a decline of listeners;

– Cannot meat business objectives when podcasting is your business;

– Loss of money in podcasting (“don’t throw good money after bad”)

– Need to pivot to a new strategy, product, offering, technology or service for your business;

– You need a break, a rest and recharging of your “batteries”;
