59- New Media professionals should OWN their own dot-com — a case study

We deliver a case study in which we explore the impact to Entrepreneurs, New Media Professionals and Startups when a platform for communication which they have used disappears.

The platform is blab.im — which the public information described as an “experiment.” However, for 3.9 Million users of this “beta” platform, the impact was a jolt for those who used it extensively for delivering content as podcasters or New Media Professionals.

In this episode, we focus on the LESSONS LEARNED — which were inspired by the discussion from Todd Cochrane and Rob Greenlee in the podcast called NEW MEDIA SHOW of 14 August 2016.

Some of these lessons learned are:

  • “Own your own dot-com”;
  • Back up and archive ALL your content — from media, to show notes, to web site, to transcripts, to text, to images, to podcasts, etc.
  • Be ready to switch to another platform as an option, should the key one (like blab.im) disappear;
  • keep current and evaluate other alternative platforms (just in case);
  • YOU, YOUR BRAND, YOUR CONTENT — these are important, and should not be identified with the platform of delivery;
  • “Any shiny new object that appears to be fun can disappear overnight”;
  • Entrepreneurs and New Media professionals must “OWN THEIR OWN DOT.COM” and NOT be dependent on a platform;
  • Avoid dependency on a platform

As you can hear in the discussion with Todd Cochrane and Rob Greenlee, there have been many such situations where the platforms have appeared, grown, and then gone.

58- Suggestions for Podfading your podcast show- when it is time

This is a repurposed episode from PodcastReporter.com.  It deals with with suggestions when you are considering podfading your show (i.e., ending your publication of episodes of your podcast show), as well as with some recommendations based on a case-in-point and sample.

The example is contained in the audio episode itself around the 11:00 minute mark.

We classified podfading into both ABRUPT and PLANNED podfades.

We have an example of a PLANNED podcast episode to podfade the show where the 3 recommended criteria are:

  1. Advise your audience or listeners that there will be no further episodes published on this show;
  2. Make the podfading episode very short and to-the-point (we recommend 2 to 3 minutes max.);
  3. Thank your audience for their attention, subscriptions, consumption of your content and where to go for the same–or better–content.

The case-in-point we have is a podcast show which was started in 2007 called “WHAT’S NEW ON IBM TV(R)?” — which podfaded in 2009. The last episode was called “Farewell and Thank You.”

Now, has IBM TV survived? Yes, but in a different format and different platform. It also has a YouTube(R) channel, where the theme of IT Solutions from IBM(R) is still the focus.

We hope that you keep the integrity of your show with your audience with the courtesy and politeness to your listeners — we feel that you owe them that. And, instead of surprise or leaving a poor taste in the mouth of your listeners, you can depart your show, as well as leave your listeners with a recommended successor so that they can get the content which they like.

56- Podcaster courtesy and tips for audio quality with Daniel J Lewis

This episode is being repurposed and re-syndicated from an earlier interview with Daniel J Lewis of The Audacity to Podcast show, in which we discussed podcaster courtesy in bumpers and interviews — along with tips for improving your audio quality via mp3 encoding.

Reason? The problem of courtesy among podcasters has grown quickly, due to the nature of the pressure —

a) to get into NEW AND NOTEWORTHY in iTunes(R) (yes, it still persists today, due to the myth started in 2013);

b) to see other podcasters as “competition” and try to outdo them in getting the exposure, links, audience awareness, etc. instead of others;

or

c) to be discourteous due to monetization goals for either download cpm revenue or product promotion, etc.

In any case, the reciprocity of giving bumpers, interviews or other types of courteous acts has grown significantly in a tense atmosphere of competition and the race for monetization.

Why?

Well, it could be that there are so many podcast shows today that being recognized and receiving the links and awareness and exposure seem to be the holy grail for podcasters.

So, we have decided to repurpose an earlier episode interview with Daniel J Lewis, host of The Audacity to Podcast, in which we discuss this issue with some caveats to the aspiring or new podcasters, as well as other screencasters who are getting into the podcasting space today.

54- Screencaster delivers free resources – Dean Haycox

In this episode, we interview Dean Haycox, the screencaster who is providing free resources to aspiring and professional screencasters. He is based out of the UK (United Kingdom), but he delivers his message and resources worldwide via his web site.

Dean is the owner of www.ScreencastMagazine.com — but the name is not totally descriptive, for it is really a blog that provides resources, show notes and the audio episodes of his audio podcast called SCREENCAST ACADEMY with Dean Haycox.

As you will hear in this audio interview, we cover Dean’s background — from logistics in the military to his full-time present job as an ambulance personnel. However, he has a passion for both geology and screencasting — and he recently launched his audio podcast on iTunes, with episode 11 as an interview with Matt Pierce of Techsmith.com.

In addition to some recommendations and tutorials, Dean also is making available his free pdf of 50 pages called THE SCREENCASTERS BLUEPRINT (a free 50-page guide to Video Marketing for Small Business Owners that describes How to successfully grow your business with video marketing).

53- Screencasts — 8 types of deliverables for you

In this episode, we discuss the eight major deliverables that can be incorporated to create effective Screencasts. We also describe some major software programs and tools for creating and editing the screencasts. 1.  Synchronized screen capture — that is, audio and video (used quite a bit for software demos);

52- THE PODCAST REPAIRMAN – an offering that may help screencasters

In this episode, we deliver an interview with Gary Leland about his new offering of THE PODCAST REPAIRMAN — both from the point of view of the Entrepreneur (i.e., why and how he entered the market of Podcast services), as well as that of the Podcaster.

51- First glimpse at podcasts in Google Play Music directory

In this episode, this Podcaster delivers a “first looks” at the Podcast listing and directory in Google Play Music — and how the user would discover and select and consume a podcast episode from the lists of podcasts.

Since I had 5 podcast shows uploaded to this program, I took a look at several of the episodes from several of the shows — so that we can understand the interface and the results of listening to the episode with the type of quality provided. The last part is important, because of the re-encoding that google does for each episode.

Google Play Music Podcast listingAlthough this is a first-glimpse of this system, it is evident to me that the re-encoding may cause unexpected results that may be sensitive in some browsers for replay.

However, when we tested the playback using the link within the chrome browser, we found no problems at all. It played as it should have.

Perhaps there were other compatibility issues with browsers other than chrome?

The audio episode delivers a first-hand audio test of the quality (especially in speed) of the playback when the system plays the audio for the listener.

We hope that any startup problems will be fixed by google in the near future, as now podcasts will be available for all platforms, and our audience participation will grow.
